The central theme of this work is expressed through three chronologically and textually interrelated, yet distinct models that have governed the theoretical development and practical growth of Oriental medicine.-nbsp;

Each of these views has itself been influenced by the changing cultural, social, religious, and medical experience of the Chinese people. The first model is "magical" correspondence. The second is that of empirical, practical medicine - the folk knowledge of herbs or materials that aided in the treatment of disease; and, third, the professional knowledge of the pharmacist or acupuncturist. The third model is that of systematic correspondences - the coherent and systematic Oriental medicine that has captured the imagination of so many in our own time. Unschuld's works teach us that medicine cannot be isolated from the society in which it is practiced.-nbsp;

By positing distinct intellectual criteria for the recognition and ordering of medical concepts in Chinese history, the author provides a means for recognizing when we may and may not call upon the long experience of Chinese medicine to validate our own adaptations. The perspectives he offers, and the models he explains, help to develop a broad understanding of Chinese medicine and to specify the antecedents of today's ideas. Because these models are carried forward in Medicine In China: History of Pharmaceutics, practitioners are able to understand how important diagnostic and therapeutic ideas may be better applied when their context is fully explained.-nbsp;

Because the author has also proposed, explained, and developed a method of translation that is able to preserve the conceptual integrity of Chinese medicine, this text is also a gateway to understanding a larger body of literature.
