The work of Milton H. Erickson, MD - including his broad range of interpersonal approaches designed to liberate potentials for self-help - has gained increasing recognition among mental health professionals as a sound and effective approach to working with diverse clients presenting with myriad issues. The term Ericksonian Psychotherapy, in fact, has earned an important place in the therapeutic vocabulary.

Jeffrey K. Zeig, a leading practitioner and teacher of Ericksonian Psychotherapy, and once a student and then a close associate of Erickson, has created a revealing portrait of the man and his work. Zeig's lens is both professional as he weaves glimpses of Erickson's style and temperament in with his basic ideas and techniques, his contributions to the field, and his highly individual methods of teaching.

In the first section of Erickson's Creativity, Zeig sheds light on Erickson as hypnotist, as psychotherapist, as teacher, and as the embodiment of his work. An individual who not only coped with lifelong physical handicaps but, in fact, made exquisite use of them, Erickson used what he had - and didn't - to develop an entirely distinctive approach to psychotherapy.

Zeig goes on to describe the basic elements of Ericksonian Psychotherapy, clarfiying both how it departs from traditional psychotherapeutic approaches and, at the same time, can be folded in to most paradigms.

In the next section on Experiences with Milton Erickson, Zeig details his personal therapy supervision with Erickson and the unique ways in which Erickson not only explained his perspective but showed it in action so that the student could eventually become the teacher. Zeig also reports on cases he observed while with Erickson.

The final section of the book is by Erickson via a transcript of the first three full days Zeig spent learning from Erickson in which several previously unreported cases appear. This transcript provides a fluid new understanding of some of Erickson's thinking and how it translates into practice.

Experiencing Erickson moves easily between persona and perspective, offering a vivid sense of the roots of the Ericksonian movement and why it continues to flourish. No matter one's theoretical orientation or level of practice, the book is an important contribution to every bookshelf.
