Zen Buddhist art is both an expression of the mind of the artist and a teaching in and of itself. Some of the most famous of all Zen masters, like the great Hakuin Ekaku, used art as a primary mode of teaching. The Zen Art Box presents Zen art for its beauty as well as for the teaching it exhibits. The box contains forty images of brush painting and calligraphy, each reproduced in fine quality on substantial card stock, and an easel stand for displaying the art, so that you can keep one on display on your desk or shelf and change the image periodically. The back of each card includes a description and decoding of the piece, along with a Dharma commentary from John Daido Loori. Also included is thirty-two-page booklet with an essay by art historian Stephen Addiss on the art of Zen. The Zen Art Box will appeal to all Zen students, and will also be a welcome gift for anyone intrigued by the arts of Buddhism and of Japan.
